The Post with no Name

I rode through the desert on a post with no name…

Hoping I got that one stuck in your head.

Actually, I’m hoping that enough readers aren’t so young that they have a clue to the reference.

I think I just made myself feel old.

Emalon is old news now, right?

He’s already been nerfed, to the ground, baby!

I finally got to down him last night on 25.

Also picked up my first Emblem of Conquest.

/me crawls off to the corner to die of embarrassment

Those are the kind of firsts you want to experience with your guild.

I didn’t do bad, middle of the pack for DPS/damage. Starting to run into people with pieces of T8/8.5 and that makes it hard to gauge if I’m in a good spot for damage.

We had a plethora of DKS, 2 of which kept asking to do Archavon first.

We had less than an hour to get this done before WG was up for grabs again and they were whining that they wanted to get *something* before the reset.

Raid leader was firm on not getting saved to a fail group so we were taking Emalon down first.

Wipe. Continue reading

Turnabout is Fair Play

Anyone ever play an Xbox game called Sudeki?
It’s one of the few games I’ve actually played from start to finish on a console.
I vaguely recall it going something like you had your party of 4 characters and could swap them out to play whichever one fit the situation best, though there were quests that required you to play specific characters.
The game also followed the inverse formula for armor on the female characters – the better the armor got, the less of it they wore. There were some nice boob shots in there.
We had Tal, the brawn of the group. He was a melee fighter and easily my favorite. Cute too.
Ailish was the princess-ranged-caster member. I was passable with her. Barely.
Buki was an animal-human mix with these nasty claw attacks. Also a melee fighter, she was my second favorite to play.
Last, Elco was the tech-gadget-guy, and user of firearms. I sucked ass at playing him. He has one escort quest (escorting his girlfriend to safety) and if you fail by her being killed he commits suicide. I couldn’t figure out for a while what was killing me, until the camera angle was just right and I caught him blowing out his brains.
Looking back on my experiences with ranged versus melee in this game, it’s a wonder I can function on a mage.
There was one other level where I HAD to use Elco. Except I hadn’t bothered using him enough earlier on to strengthen his abilities or get him new gear. And, as mentioned, I sucked at playing ranged.
I got through most of the level OK, but then I got to the boss. And he creamed me. Repeatedly.
My husband hadn’t really played the game yet, just fiddled with the opening level or so.
I asked him to please come beat this boss for me.
I think it took him 3 tries. I had been trying for hours.
This is going somewhere, I promise.
In the weekend news:
I got my scorchling!
Also got a screenshot of the beer in the ice chest.
Also finally exalted with the pervs and got the 22-slot bag pattern. I will be slowly converting my Frostweave bags to the Mammoth bags. Also saving for the exalted mount.
Worked on my druid and toyed with my warrior. Got Dominos to behave on switching stance bars. Turns out I was being an idiot, got that corrected.
I’ve decided that there are many silly things in the game, but few compare to a male tauren on the fire pole dance.
I *really* want to level my priest, but I’ve sort of fallen into leveling paired with AwesomeBMHunter and he’s visiting family for a week. So I’m limiting myself to the Midsummer torch dailies and cleaning up some trash in Tarren Mill. Also ran an SM GY with my hubby tanking on his pally. The rare I wanted spawned but did not drop my helm. Bastard! Ran Library and Arcanist Doan didn’t drop the chest I wanted. Bastard!
Started a troll shaman to level with a friend that we suckered into playing.
And by suckering, I mean we applied logic.
She’s the girlfriend of my mage/DK buddy. She is not a gamer. When gamers date non-gamers this can cause the gamer to lose out on gaming. He promised to tank for my priest on AwesomeRetributionPally. I will not lose him to the wiles of a woman, dammit.
So our little hunter (who really isn’t a gamer either) and I launched a campaign to initiate the non-gamer into our world.
Turns out she got him to commit to square dancing. He went and maybe almost liked it. I don’t know that I’ve ever gotten a clear answer on his appreciation level for the activity, but he’s signed up again this fall.
So we approached her with the, “he tried this for you, you can try this for him” strategy. And it worked!
We pitched in to get her the game and first expansion (we’ll wait to see how it goes before getting Wrath) and a couple game time cards.
The little hunter will be getting the zhevra for the recruit a friend, as I already have it.
I think we’re heading over some time this week to get her set up.
Anyway, I’m totally digging the casting animations on the troll shaman.
I’m also feeling pretty OP on him in the starting area. I think I’ve come a long way from my poor night elf warrior getting slaughtered by level 6 spiders. Repeatedly.
A random level 80 rode up to me in the starting area and gave me some linen bags. /cheer
Looks like someone is leveling tailoring…
Back to me, my husband, and games.
I have always considered my husband to be a better gamer than myself, and still do.
He picks up the physicalities of a game faster than I do. I can learn strats and theory just as well, but when it comes to pushing button X at the right time I *know* I’m supposed to push X and then I push ∆ instead.
I also used to get really flustered when things started moving quickly, but I think I”m getting better about that. I should really plug in Killer Instinct and see if I still revert to a quivering pile of button mashing. Oh wait, that’s how you’re supposed to play Orchid.
Anyway, my poor rogue hubby can’t do Thrusting Hodir’s Spear.
He’s tried for weeks and never managed to pull it off.
I’ve gone over the strategy with him, watched him push the buttons.
For whatever reason, there’s an issue with it recognizing his Dodge and Grip.
Thank god for his parachute cloak.
I watched him again last night and he was able to get to the second phase, but wasn’t able to deliver the killing blow.
Parachute cloak does not save you from death in phase 2.
We swap places and I run the quest.
OMG.
When you have certain add ons, keybinds, and your screen laid out a certain way, you get used to it. Playing someone else’s character with their settings is completely loopy. What button puts me on a mount? You remapped basic movement keys? WTF? How I mine fish?!?!?!?!
Grab a drake and nail the quest in 1 shot.
I turned and looked at him and it was like a personal “level up” moment for me. I swear I got swirly lights all around me and received a new talent point. Where to spend it?
Years ago when he beat that boss for me in Sudeki, if someone had told me that I would someday be able to return the favor I would have laughed my ass off. And then notified the loony bin that they have an escapee with brain damage in my house.
Apparently, I now get to thrust the spear for him every day until he’s exalted. (Insert inappropriate joke about my spear thrusting skills here.)
14K to go…

Emblems of Easymode

OK, every one is on the bandwagon talking about the emblem changes.
Before I get too far into this, I want to say I don’t have a very strong opinion about the whole mess. I’m a little irked about it and have a couple beefs, but I can also see how this will benefit me. I’m trying to find the silver lining here.
In case you’ve been living under a rock, here’s what Blizz has up their sleeve:
quote
Emblem System Changes
Both the 10 and 25-player instances of the Crusaders’ Coliseum drop a new Emblem of Triumph.
Any dungeons that previously dropped Emblems of Heroism or Valor, such as Naxxramas or Heroic Halls of Stone, will now drop Emblems of Conquest instead. Emblems of Conquest can still be converted to Valor or Heroism.
The Heroic dungeon daily quest will now reward 2 Emblems of Triumph and the normal daily dungeon quest will reward 1 Emblem of Triumph.
The existing achievements to collect 1, 25, 50, etc. Emblems of Heroism, Valor, and Conquest have been converted to Feats of Strength since Heroism and Valor Emblems are no longer attainable.
New achievements have been added to collect various amounts of any combination of emblems.
end quote
So today:
Heroic 5-man = EoH
Daily Heroic = EoH
VoA 10 = EoH
Naxx 10 = EoH
Naxx 25 = EoV
Uld 10 = EoV
VoA 25 = EoV (Archavon only)
VoA 25 = EoC (Emalon only)
Uld 25 = EoC
Emblem exchange is roughly like:
EoH = Tier 7/ilevel 200/heirloom items
EoV = Tier 7.5/ilevel 213
EoC = Tier 8/ilevel 226
And in the possible future:
Heroic 5-man = EoC
Daily Normal = EoT
Daily Heroic = EoT
VoA 10 = EoC
Naxx 10 = EoC
Naxx 25 = EoC
Uld 10 = EoC
VoA 25 = EoC
Uld 25 = EoC
Coliseum 10 = EoT
Coliseum 25 = EoT
Emblem exchange should look like:
EoC = Tier 7 – Tier 8/ilevel 200 – 226/heirloom items
EoT = Tier 9/ilevel 232+
I think Blizz’s intention is to remove gear as the obstacle for people seeing content. Mind you, Naxx and Uld are going to be old content by the time this happens. (And let’s face it, this is from the PTR notes, this may never see the light of day.)
Beef #1: Why have the dailies give EoT? I do feel those should be EoC. When the content is older, say the next patch after this, then I probably wouldn’t care, but it seems like a bit of a jump to go from Heroic to Tier 9.
What seems to be the problem?
The problem is that a fresh 80 can run heroics until his fingers bleed (or be carried through them) and purchase some snazzy Tier 8 and possibly Tier 9 gear, without having to bother with that pesky Tier 7 or even ilevel 200 crap.
This not-quite-so-fresh anymore 80 (it will take many, many runs to get enough emblems to gear this way) could then enter LFG for the Coliseum.
A quick armory shows that he’s Ulduar-level geared, so he gets invited.
He then causes a massive wipe because he’s never cleared Naxx but he’s run Heroic Nexus every day for 3 months.
What is the real problem?
Evaluating a player’s gear will no longer be an effective method of determining skill.
But you know what?
It’s not effective today.
I’ve been in plenty of PuGs where people meet the gear requirements set by the raid leader and still die in the fire. Other players in greens and blues are blowing them out of the water.
As I said several posts back,
quote
Gear makes a player prettier. It does not automatically make a player better.
end quote
link http://clearcasting.wordpress.com/2009/02/23/fail-or-no-fail/
Euripedes said it another way in one of his comments:
quote
I mean, if someone who’s never been outside of a heroic instance rolls into Ulduar with all his new shinies, he’s not going to magically apparate the skill needed to raid there.
He’s just going to look cool when he wipes.
endquote
link: http://criticalqq.wordpress.com/2009/06/22/on-elitism-and-free-t8/
So if we can’t use gear to exclude people, what do we use?
Comparing achievements is probably going to be the smarter way to go about weeding out baddies.
Beef #2: On my server at least, about 2 days after content hits all the LFG looks like: “LFM for InstanceX, link stats and achievement.”
This could make it even harder to get around the achievement requirements.
Are there any other problems?
Well yeah, the people that have Tier 8 now won’t be special snowflakes because all these other scrubs also have Tier 8.
Except those players that were cutting edge to Tier 8 are now going to be cutting edge to Tier 9. They shouldn’t care about Tier 8 anymore.
Will scrubs be able to get Tier 9?
Yes, it looks like they can slowly accrue enough EoT through the dailies to get a few Tier 9 pieces.
So we’ll call those “welfare nines” and we’ll look for the BoP items that prove you were there and did that.
If a baddy slips through the cracks, he gets booted. Keep note of who did well and who didn’t. Ya know, same as we do today when we pick up someone that has been carried through content.
I don’t have a beef with this.
So where’s that silver lining?
I’m leveling an alt. Other people are leveling alts.
Ever had a situation like, “Oh noes, so and so (top healer or tank) is going away foreva and we need someone to fill their place. Quick! Everyone level a healing/tanking alt!”?
And everyone groans because this means that the Ulduar-raiding guild now has to slog through Naxx again to get the gear for the alt to progress.
Or… now you can bust out some chain heroics, run a raid or two, and fill in the missing pieces with badges.
The alts won’t be top-of-the-line geared, but it will be good enough to get them back into a raid and let the player show that skill can make up for some discrepancy in gear.
I don’t see this change benefiting BRAND NEW players that are making the climb from 1 to 80. The really good players will steamroll through everything, just as they would have before, maybe faster. The mediocre players may see a little benefit since they have decent, tangible goals to shoot for in gear. This may keep them in the game long enough to pick up the missing piece in play or mechanics and become a decent raider. The baddies… will still be bad. They’ll have gear, but they won’t have titles and achievements. At least, no more than they do now.
For ALTS, I see this as a massive benefit. My guild won’t have to grind Naxx repeatedly just to get me geared enough to run in Ulduar on my priest. I’ll be able to PuG heroics (much less painful than raids) and get caught up. I will still have to run some content to get the badges, so I will still have the opportunity to learn the nuances of my new class. Blizz is not just mailing epics to people – you still have to have the time/patience/skill to run enough of something to get the badges. Or sucker enough people into carrying you through, but how is that different from now?
For people that BUY ACCOUNTS, this will come back to bite them in the ass, sort of like it does now.
Suggestions:
Drop the dailies from EoT to EoC to avoid that huge ilevel jump.
Add something like a Raid Weekly that would reward EoT for things like taking down specific bosses in Naxx/Uld/VoA/EoE/OS. The 10 and 25 versions can reward different amounts of emblems. Maybe toss in a couple EoC or an extra EoT if the kill was made on a hard mode or within a certain amount of time. Maybe even have a collection of daily/weekly quests that focus around earning achievements in the heroics that award EoT.
If we can’t already, add in the ability to compare statistics between characters in game. Seeing that someone has completed Naxx once via an achievement posting isn’t quite the same as seeing that they’ve downed every wing 30+ times.
Instead of screwing around with the emblems, keep them the same and add BoA gear to purchase with them – level 80 BoA stuff, not the heirloom items. Equip an alt with level 80 gear.
TL;DR
I won’t go as far as to say I think this is a “good” thing, there are a few points that I think need to be tweaked. I think new gear is being made too easily available, even with the amount of time it will take to “earn” that gear. I also think that with gear being even less of an indicator of skill, it will be harder for small guilds to see the new content in anything resembling a timely fashion since everyone will want achievements posted for invites.
Personally, I plan on abusing the hell out of this to make gearing my alt as painless as possible for me and my guild.

EDIT #2: Just found out yesterday (7/28/09) that the NORMAL daily dungeon will no longer award an Emblem of Triumph, it will now award an Emblem of Conquest.

OK, every one is on the bandwagon talking about the emblem changes.

The Loot Fairy Loves Me

My mage buddy in the guild gets into a Naxx 25-KT only last night.

Wednesday night and you’ve got KT only?

Lucky.

They get him down to some ridiculously low percentage, fail, and 9 people bail.

WTF?

It’s only Wednesday, you almost had him, you’re now saved (on WEDNESDAY), and you leave?

Get me in on this!

A quick whisper to the raid leader with my stats and achievement gets me in.

I recognize a few people in the raid.

We have the split-personality pally. I think it was personality number 1… with a few weeks of practice under his belt. He wasn’t nasty enough to be personality number 2. But he did show up to a raid with no reagents to buff people.

Hey, we also have the rogue who ninjas BoE gear. OK, he’s not loot master and he’s not in the same guild as the raid leader.

No vent, since it’s just KT.

Summon in our last druid, fight starts immediately (who wanted to buff the druid? no one? guess not) and would you believe that not everyone made it to the center in time so we got swarmed by a-bombs?

Wipe. Continue reading

Even More Midsummer

Well, it was mostly the Good Way for the restart of the Midsummer quests…

Here’s what I was able to do:

  • Any flame I had honored or desecrated LAST year or on SUNDAY was reset. For me, this was all of old world.
  • Any flame I had stolen on SUNDAY seems to have been reset. I have only tested this on Exodar so far. The guards there are really bitchy and Mirror Images are still fucking retarded.
  • A “new” daily quest, Striking Back, is available from the Earthen Ring representative at a capital bonfire. I may have missed this the other day. Fly out to Hellfire Peninsula and twiddle with an Ice Stone by the Dark Portal (look for the cultists that weren’t there last week). This summons a large Glacial Templar that can be 1-shot by an 80. Returning this quest gets you an additional 10 blossoms.

Here’s what I was NOT able to do:

  • Any flame I honored or desecrated on MONDAY was still honored/desecrated and I was not able to interact with them. My hubby was able to re-do any Outland or Northrend flames he happened to pick up on Sunday, but anything from Monday was a negative.
  • I was not able to pick up the quest line to kill Ahune again so did not get a chance to pick up the second tabard. (We were still able to summon and kill him, just can’t get the quest line again.)

Midsummer Mayhem?

So…

Last night I finish up the Midsummer achievements (honored and desecrated all the Northrend fires just for giggles also) and earned my title – Flame Keeper Arioch in the house.

And then a friend sends me this link: http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=17631614070&sid=1

For those of you at work, here’s the important bit:

We are in the process of applying an in-game fix that will restart all of the quests associated with the Midsummer Fire Festival event and allow players to complete them once again. If you are in the process of completing an achievement such as Extinguishing Kalimdor, this fix will reset your progress and you will need start over. This fix will require realms to be restarted.

WTF?

This can go one of two ways:

  1. Good Way – I retain my achievements and title and get to run around doing enough fires to get just enough burning blossoms so I can get the vanity item. (I bought the pet already but won’t have enough blossoms to get the brazier.)
  2. Bad Way – I lose my achievements and title and have to run around and get ALL the fires again.

I’m pretty sure it’s going to be the Good Way, but I won’t get to find out until tonight. Continue reading

Midsummer Madness!

Oh boy oh boy oh boy!

Another holiday event!

And this one is 15 days long!

It’s time for the Midsummer Festival, so grab your marshmallows and head out to bonfires scattered all over the bloody world. Collect Burning Blossoms to buy spiffy gear, fun foods, and a vanity pet.

For the Meta Achievement and unlocking the title of “The Flame Keeper” you will need to complete the following achievements:

Arcane Fortitude

In the Mage Q&A there was talk about the Arcane tree being a little bloated:

Community Team: Now let’s jump to some questions about specific talent specs. Firstly, the Arcane tree is widely considered too bloated. It seems that, over time, the talent trees of all classes have really evolved to provide plenty of different options with fewer five-point talents to allow for greater customization. There are several flavorful talents in the Arcane tree (i.e. Student of the Mind, Magic Absorption, Magic Attunement, Incanter’s Absorption, etc.), but many players feel that they cannot afford to spend points in such places since many of the most necessary damage-dealing talents require five points.

How do you feel about revitalizing the Arcane tree to thin out some of these five-point talents?

Ghostcrawler: Arcane is a little bloated. If you take all of the damage and mana talents there aren’t many left to spend on the more fun or cool talents. We recognize that it’s hard, for instance, to have a single Arcane build that can work in both PvE and PvP. To be clear though this is a problem with several of the talent trees and not a problem with Arcane alone. If you look at say the warrior Protection tree or the paladin Retribution tree, those provide a model for where we’d like to take talent trees in the future – fewer talents overall and plenty of points to spend on fun play-style choices that really do feel optional rather than talents you need to make your spec function. Also note that fixing some mage mana issues might make some of the mana talents feel less mandatory.

Was there an answer in there? I was looking for a simple “yes, there is bloat and we are going to make some 5-point talents only take up 3 points” or a “no, you’re an idiot and your arcane tree is working as intended.”

I would love to see Arcane Mind and Mind Mastery reduced to 3 points each, that would rock my socks.

But… why limit bloat removal to trimming down points when we can remove some useless crap in the tree altogether?

Which brings us to Arcane Fortitude. Continue reading

Blizz Patch Notes Faked?

I ask this for one reason: Mages are mentioned and it’s not a nerf or change to an icon image.

It’s that time again, the patch notes for the changes on the PTR are out; our first comprehensive glimpse of what patch 3.2 may hold in store.

As always, the current PTR notes can be found at: http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/patchnotes/test-realm-patchnotes.html

OMG SO MUCH STUFF!!!

I’m highlighting the stuff that interested me, and often in a disjointed manner. If it doesn’t make sense, go read the damn patch notes yourself.

General

  • It looks like we’re going to have to make some adjustments to our vocabulary. The raids formerly known as “heroic” will be referred to as “25 player normal.”
    Why?
    Because they are getting crazy.
There will be “heroic” versions available of 10 AND 25 man raids. The LFG screen may get confusing… 10-man heroics and 25-man normals. /head scratch
And some new tribute system that makes it sound like there will be a “Get out of fail PuG free” card that will allow you to (maybe?) attempt the new Coliseum raid multiple times in a lock out period. EDIT: Was talking with hubby about this tribute thing and realized I must have been snorting the arcane powder when reading this the first time. It looks more like a “you have X amounts of times to even TRY to drop this boss this week” sort of thing. Not at all what I was thinking. Good for great players. Sucks for my guild, but it will be ages before we see it anyway.
  • Isle of Conquest
I haven’t even gotten around to SotA yet. I’m a slacker. This appears to have much potential.
  • New Argent Tournament goodies
OMG more pets, mounts, upgrade your squire, and a new HEIRLOOM CHEST that will STACK the XP bonus with shoulders. Get cracking on your Argent Crusade rep now.
  • New druid skins.
I may actually pick up my druid again. Of course the colors I like in the different forms don’t match up… so I have to figure out what form I will be in the most and change my hide color accordingly.
  • Portals to the Dark Portal
    /cry
No more charging out the ass for a portal to Stonard.
  • New Orgrimmar to Thunder Bluff zeppelin.
Because when I was your age, sonny, we ran to TB. Naked. In the snow. Uphill. Both ways. And we liked it.
  • Postal service is lazy.
More mailboxes. More dipshits with mammoths on mailboxes.
  • Children’s week in Dalaran
Only comment – this better give me another damned pet. Continue reading

I’m it?

Apparently I was tagged last month to participate in a blog-internet-meme-thing and I was completely oblivious to it…

But I finally got caught up on the archives over at Reputation Grind and now I’m making good on the tag.

Since I was late on the uptake here I’m not going to tag anyone to continue, but it’s kind of fun if anyone wants to try.
